IE6 is getting the boot from Doodlekit

IE6 gets the boot from DoodlekitCome Doodlekit’s next new major release in August/September, the web browser IE6 (Internet Explorer 6) will no longer be supported by Doodlekit.  This will be true for all our user websites as well. There are many reasons why we have decided to move forward with this, but here are the four major ones:

  1. IE6 sucks.  Seriously, it is has been the single most limiting obstruction for web designers for over the last 4-6 years.  Since IE6 has traditionally commanded the largest market share of web browsers world wide (unfairly), we web designers and developers had no choice but to deal with its crippling limitations.  No more.  Its usage numbers dwindle each day.
  2. Earlier this year, in March, Microsoft released IE8.  IE6 is now officially two versions behind the latest IE release.  Hey… don’t you think it’s time to upgrade????  Even better, you could switch to Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Opera!  IE8 still sucks compared to all these other browsers.
  3. As of today, about 11% of Doodlekit visitors are using IE6.  By the time we roll out our next major release that number will probably drop down to around 6-7%.  With the # of users affected being such a small percentage of the Doodlekit nation, we're willing to take the risk in order to deliver business value to the vast majority of others. That's all part of being at the forefront of technology! Plus, if we did develop the new release of Doodlekit to accommodate IE6 users, it would probably add another 2-3 months on to our development time.  That being said, by the time we did that release, there would even be less IE6 users... maybe 4-5%? Totally not worth doing…
  4. Without having to code to IE6, we can now use PNG files.  PNG files are image files that allow for transparency and gradients.  This single one item will allow us to expand Doodlekit’s design tools and features twice over… if not more.

Well, you won’t see me crying when we officially give IE6 the boot.  And I know once you see all the new cool stuff that Doodlekit will be able to do without IE6 limitations, you won’t be bawling either.  Good riddance I say!  Hey IE6, don’t let the door hit you on the way out…

Thank goodness! I can use PNG files soon! Those image files are what I rely on most to bring out some variety in web designing. Thanks a bunch guys!

IE6 has lose support from Microsoft itself, it's two-major-release-old, and it's insecure.
Internet Explorer 6 for Microsoft Windows XP Professional is still supported (will have security updates till 2010) but not the XP Home realease with Service Pack 3 (see http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifesupsps/ )
It's not only a matter of business: it's common sense.
The fact that a lot of users still browse the web with that ugly mix-of-bug tell us about the average smartness of internet users.
I don't want to look polemic, but my first business area is in System Administration and security it's NOT a secondary point: i cannot, woudn't, will not, don't want support defective products.
Nowaday customers asking me IE6 support see their bill rise 2x.
