HOWTO - Edit Your DNS Settings With the Doodlekit Domain Tool

Tue May 12, 2009 @ 10:22AM

Doodlekit’s DNS Tool lets you manage your DNS records if you’re using our name servers for your domain. To use this tool click on Settings then Domain Name from the Administration section of your website.

Setting up MX records for E-Mail

The most common reason for editing your DNS records is for setting up a third party E-Mail system like Gmail or GoDaddy with your Doodlekit hosted domain. We’ve setup a few presets for common email providers which should make setup a snap. Just select your provider from the drop down and hit Setup. You can then customize the settings if you need to

Custom Records

If your provider isn’t on the list, click Custom. This will allow you to add MX, CNAME and A records to your domain. Note: We automatically create the root records such as 'mywebsite[dot]com' and 'www[dot]mywebsite[dot]com' to point to Doodlekit. This can only be used for E-Mail and Sub Domains.

How long does it take?

After you edit your DNS records it can take up to 24 hours to take affect. DNS settings have to propagate to servers all over the world.

How do I know if my Name Servers are setup correctly?

If you’ve registered a new domain with your new Doodlekit website, the Name Servers should automatically be setup for you. If you chose to use an existing domain or have registered your domain outside of Doodlekit you will need to follow these instructions.

If your not sure you can check by using a Whois Lookup. Just search for your domain and look under the name servers or DNS servers section.

Hi

I think I may have posted my response to the wrong forum topic. I want to keep my current email host, powweb. I cannot switch over my hosting servers without losing all of the mail forwarding that I currently have from what I read. I would like to go live with my website by Wednesday of this week.

What can I give you to tell me how to set up the email forwarding using my existing email host? I tried using the interface for custom DNS and it said that I had an incorrect name.

Please help.

Thanks,
Julia

You can setup the MX records under the domain tab under settings. If you can get the right MX records from your existing domain host I'll set them up for you.

Hello, I need to be able to keep my emails as well as they currently are with Comcast. My website domain host is GoDaddy, but I am not sure how to prevent my emails from being lost when I switch over to make the website live through DoodleKit! I am sure lots of people are running into this, would it be possible to have some instruction? I want to get the website running by January 4th and I am stuck here......

Thanks for the help,

A different Julia

You'll need to get the MX records from Comcast. It might be in there help section, or you might need to call them. Once you have those you can either set them up under the Domain tab, or email them to us using the contact form and I'll set them up for you.

The name of my site if followed by "-org.doodlekit.com". Is the ".org" something that I entered or can I rename the site and leave that off?

The -org.doodlekit.com domain name is only temporary. If you have upgraded and chosen a domain name, or registered it on your own and followed these steps then you should be able to go to your .org address to get to your website.

I changed my MX records for my email. I switched my DNS over from Godaddy to Doodlekit. But I am not able to send or receive new email.

When I do a server check it says your domain is pointed to GoDaddy still, but I can see that you attempted to switch to Doodlekit. This can take some time but not more than 48 hours usually.

There's not much I can do, it's GoDaddy's responsibility to get the DNS records changed accurately. You'll need to contact them.

OK sorry if it was not explained properly. What I am looking to do is have my website hosted here, but receive and send email through GoDaddy. How would I accomplish this?
