As a Doodlekit client I will share you my gmail email forwarding process / experience.
When I registered my domain with Doodlekit I also registered a Google Apps account for my www.vernonchalmers.com domain. On verification as the domain owner I created a few gmail accounts inside the Google Apps account.
On each gmail account I then created a mail forward to my personal email address (which is non gmail). Then I specified the new vernonchalmers.com address in Doodlekit's back-end / User/ Email section (the forward created there was the same I did in my gmail Apps account).
Not sure if this is making it any clearer for you - at least this is how I got it going. There may be an easier procedure.
