Images - Bring Your Site to Life!
How many times have you been happily surfing around the web and stumbled on a site full of text? Ugh. If you’re like me, you read through a couple of sentences and then…..TLDR. You’re off to the next option returned by your google search. Here’s what we’ve learned: people don’t want to just visit a site, they want to experience it.
According to a study done by Microsoft, people today have an attention span of roughly 8 seconds. (P.S. that is less than a goldfish) We are a visual culture, where cameras are capturing moments that are being shared instantaneously. Therefore, quickly capturing the attention of your website visitor is critical. One way to draw them in is by using images and other visual media.
Here are some tips we’ve learned along the way about using visual media:
Placement Matters - Make sure you use appropriate image placement to draw a visitor in. Images should feel natural to the visitor. Put your headlines and copy below or to the right of the image for maximum effect. Play with size! Make your images large and the primary focus of the page.
Be Original - Stock photography has it’s place, but photos and videos of real people in your business are much better than posed stock people. People relate to people, so use humans wherever possible. Remember, people connect to brands on an emotional level so show off your people and customers as much as your products.
Use High Resolution/High Quality - Use clear images with vivid or contrasting colors. If you have an online store, high-definition images are critical for your buyer. Show multiple viewpoints of your products to give a better perspective to you customer.
Be Interesting - Using interesting and engaging images will help your site attract more visitors. Don’t be afraid to be a little quirky in your pictures. This is another area where perfection isn’t necessary.
Optimize for SEO - Choose relevant images and use search-optimized keywords and metadata in descriptions of your pictures. Many people use Google Images to do their searching, so make sure your images are showing up in results.
